Hosting a Fellow

Housing

The International Fellowship program at the World Forest Institute (WFI) brings forestry and forest products professionals from around the world to work at WFI for 6 to 12 months. Over 80 Fellows from 25 countries have participated in the program.

Every year families and individuals in the Portland area house our international Fellows. These host families provide another chance to experience life in the U.S. The cultural experiences that hosts provide are often the most cherished experiences of our Fellows.

Hosts provide housing for Fellows during their first month in Portland. If the arrangement is suitable for both parties, the arrangement can be continued for the entire length of the Fellow's stay (usually 6-12 months). Fellows pay rent for the housing ($400 per month, which includes all utilities). WFI Fellows are responsible for their own meals and cooking.

Host homes must be easily accessible by Trimet and be under a one hour commute to WFC. WFI Fellows are professionals and generally work a 9 am to 5 pm schedule with occasional travel.

The host provides:
A private bedroom
Access to shared restroom, kitchen, laundry, and internet access
Storage space in the fridge and kitchen

Safe and friendly atmosphere

English Language Practice

WFI also utilizes volunteers to practice conversational English with incoming Fellows. Volunteers meet once or twice per week with Fellows to chat, answer questions, and share experiences.
